Newly Appointed Wing Commander for No.3 Welsh Wing

Wing Commander M D Stones BEng MRAeS RAF VR(T)________________________________________

A new Wing Commander was appointed in 2011 to replace the retiring Wg Cdr Bob Wilson. The new OC 3WW is Wg Cdr Mike Stones, who was promoted from his duties as a Wing Staff Officer and who had previously been a hugely successful Squadron Commander.

His tenure as OC 499 (Port Talbot) Squadron was exemplary, with successes in all aspects of the Corps syllabus, including providing the winning team (twice) in the British Schools Aeronautical Challenge, when 499 Squadron became the first ATC team to win and the only one to win twice.

His Squadron continually produced Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards, along with a multitude of Silver and Bronze awards. Under his command, one of his cadets won the Dacre Sword and in his last year in command, he had a cadet who won the Blackham Bronze, for being the best male cadet in Wales & West.

His Squadron produced outstanding cadets in shooting, adventure training, sports, community work and aircraft recognition, with a large number of them representing the Corps on the International Air Cadet Exchange across the world.
Since his appointment to Wing Staff Duties, he had held the post of Training Officer, Duke of Edinburgh Officer and BTEC Officer, all of which became successful with his guidance.

He said of his promotion to Wing Commander as “being an incredible opportunity, a huge challenge and a great honour for me, as there is without doubt, no Wing that can compete with No 3 Welsh Wing”.

Wg Cdr Stones is married to Helen, with two young children.

We wish Wg Cdr Mike Stones all the success for the future and we look forward to the leadership and direction from this inspirational officer.
