Maesteg Air Cadets Achieve BTEC Awards

Four Cadets of 631 (Maesteg) Squadron Air Training Corps  have  obtained a Level Two BTEC Intermediate Certificate in Aviation Studies.Their certificates, awarded by Edexcel, recognise the effort that they have put into studying and completing all the levels in the Air Training Corps training syllabus, and is equaivalent to two GSCEs (A*-C).

The ATC training syllabus is studied on Squadron parade nights and starting at the First Class qualification, the cadets then moved on to the Leading , Senior and Master Cadet exams that form the training syllabus in the Corps.

The four cadets, Sergeant Chris Raymond, Corporal David Lakin, Corporal Scott Mably and Corporal Dan  Mably, are the first at 631 Squadron to be able to turn their ATC studies into a nationally recognised qualification.

Among the subjects studied were Airmanship, Map Reading, Expedition Training, Propulsion, Radio Communication and Operational Flying.

Cpl Lakin said “As an A level student this type of qualification will help me stand out when I apply to University next year”.

631 Squadron meet at Upper Street Maesteg on a Tuesday and Friday evening and welcome boys and girls aged 13 and over. The Squadron also welcomes adults who would like to help at the Squadron. Adults do not need to have previous ATC or RAF experience and can serve either in a uniformed or civilian instructor capacity.
