Officer Commanding 3 Welsh Wing - Christmas Message

Christmas Message_____________________________________________________________________

Dear 3 Welsh Wing Cadets, Staff, Committee Members and friends of 3 Welsh Wing,

If the truth be known, I have a hard time reconciling where 2012 has disappeared to!
This year has been good for the Wing in many respects. Over 120 cadets have participated in quality overseas camp opportunities to North West Europe to undertake cultural and historical visits to the battlefields of the 2nd World War, Jersey to take part in the annual Battle of the Flowers Parade in addition to a 2 week camp to Gibraltar where many cadets gained the internationally recognised PADI open water diving qualification. We've participated to a high standard at the Regional Field training day at RAF Cosford and fielded good participation in Wing athletics, Wing swimming and no less than 22 Sqns  present at the Afan Argoed Challenge in February.
The Wing has led the Corps in providing 2 PTLLS courses this year and 15 of our staff and adult cadet colleagues successfully completed a Wing facilitated BEL course under the leadership of Sqn Ldr Behenna, thus boosting our ability as a Wing to provide adventure training and D of E expedition opportunities in the future. Similarly this year, we have re-established ourselves as a Wing able to provide Sqn and Wing shooting opportunities and for this I must thank the Wing shooting Officer for his hard work in facilitating our collective Wing compliance in this regard; next year I want us to build on our marksmanship training and participate in competitions throughout the Corps to a high calibre (no pun intended!).
I'm pleased that we continue to attract good quality staff and I'm delighted that many of our younger staff cadre have gone on to take the reins at units that were until recently perceived as failing, but which are now starting to flourish under their dynamic and enthusiastic leadership. Having said that, our focus as a Wing  for 2013 must continue to be one of cadet and staff recruitment and retention, and this will happen as we continue to provide challenging, rewarding and relevant activities and quality training to all our members in support of the overarching 'Core Corps' ethos. Concurrently, I look forward  to all units continuing to work together proactively to ensure positive outcomes across our Wing for the development of the young people in our charge; for this to happen during 2013 and onwards, I will require all of our staff to take an active participation in sharing the Wing workload, especially when attending Sporting activities at Wing, Regional and at Corps level.
For this, I thank you all in advance for the selfless dedication to the young people in your respective communities that you continue to offer them despite the day to day personal challenges you face regarding your own family, work and life balances.
Lastly, at this time of year, whilst being able to reflect on the positive, I am also aware that some of our respected friends and colleagues have been lost to us or have suffered tragic loss this year, whilst others continue to battle with personal health issues and I respectfully request that we continue to afford them our consideration, especially at Christmas time when the loss is felt even more.
2013 Will undoubtedly have its challenges, but it will also have its rewards. We look forward to Wing Camps in Normandy and Gibraltar and supporting the Swansea air-show collectively as a Wing in early July, and having had the pleasure of meeting our new AOC earlier this year, I believe the Corps as whole has someone at the highest level who will provide stability and continuity for many years to come.
I wish you all and your families a very relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break, and thank you all once again for your kindness and the generosity you have shown over the last year.
My kindest and warmest regards,

Mike and Family
OC 3WW
