948 (Haverfordwest & City of St.Davids) Squadron Band Perform At The Quayside Haverfordwest

Jubilee Celebrations______________________________________________________________________________

Cadets form 948 Haverfordwest and St David’s Squadron Air Training Corps had a busy Diamond Jubilee weekend with the band playing at three venues during the course of the celebrations.

On Sunday the band was invited to play at the Rotary Club celebrations that were held on seafront at Milford Haven where they gave a display of their musical and marching skills.

Following this they went on to give an indoor concert for the residents at Havenhurst home in Milford Haven as part of their celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

On Monday evening the band performed on the Quayside at Haverfordwest as part of the Diamond Jubilee River Regatta celebrations.

This included a display of musical and marching skills, and providing the musical accompaniment for the Horn Pipe dances performed by the Sea Cadets.

The finale to the evening was the Beating Retreat ceremony at the end of the day’s celebrations.

Beating Retreat is an old military tradition that dates back many centuries and is designed to ensure that servicemen are in the safety of their compound before the camp is secured for the night.

The ceremony involved displays of musical and ceremonial skills by the massed band as a whole, and individual displays of drumming and bell lyre playing by groups of four cadets.

The parade was concluded with the last post played by a lone cadet on the bugle, followed by a rousing rendition of the God Save the Queen played by the whole band.

Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Andrew Clark commented “We were all very pleased to have performed at events in Pembrokeshire over the week end in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. It gave the cadets the chance to display their musical and marching talents to a wide audience and we hope everyone that saw us performing enjoyed themselves. It is particularly important that we can return something to the community which is so supportive of the squadron and this is one way that the cadets can do this.”

Anyone wishing to join the Squadron as a cadet or as an adult volunteer should contact Flight Lieutenant Clark on 01437 767030.
