948 (Haverfordwest & City of St.Davids) Squadron Beat The Retreat

The band of 948 Haverfordwest and St Davids’ Squadron Air Training Corps has a busy itinerary during the summer period starting with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations this weekend.

On Sunday 3rd June the band will be playing at the Milford Haven Round Table Jubilee celebrations and on Monday 4th June the band will provide the finale to the Haverfordwest Jubilee River Festival by Beating Retreat on the Quayside in Haverfordwest.

Beating Retreat involves a display of musical and marching skills and has been used in the armed forces for centuries to mark the end of the day, when the post was secured and soldiers called into the safety of camp for the night.

The band’s summer season will reach a climax in August when they parade at the Battle of the Flowers in Jersey. The band performed at the Battle of the Flowers last year and has been invited back to play in this years celebrations by the organisers.

In the past few months the band has played at a number of prestigious venues including the Liberty Stadium for Shane Williams' final appearance,  the ANZAC day parade in Milford Haven, and the celebrations to mark the  Welsh Spitfire Open Day at the Spitfire museum at Withybush Airfield last Sunday.

Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Andrew Clark commented “We are all very pleased to be performing at events in Pembrokeshire over the week end in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This gives the cadets, who are aged between 13 and 20, the opportunity to display their musical talents to the wider community. It is a testament to their musical skills that they have been invited to the Battle of the Flowers for a second year.”

Anyone wishing to join the Squadron as a cadet or as an adult volunteer should contact Flight Lieutenant Clark on 01437 767030.
